The University Archives maintains the permanent records of the University of Notre Dame. Since many of these records are recent and confidential, they are not generally open for use by scholars. University administrators consult them as part of the process of decision-making. Some of the records, however, are old enough to be open for use by researchers, and finding aids for them are available in the Archives and on the Internet. The Archives also collects papers of Notre Dame faculty members. Ask Peter Lysy.
Since the 1870s, Notre Dame has been known for its collections of manuscripts documenting the history of the Catholic Church in the United States, including correspondence of early missionary bishops, papers of prominent Catholic religious and lay people, and records of significant Catholic organizations. Ask Kevin Cawley.
Since photographs require different techniques for preservation than do paper records, the University Archives stores and cares for them in a separate department. Our collections include photographs documenting the history of Notre Dame and the history of the Catholic Church in America. Many images are available online. Like photographs, audio-visual material requires special care. The University Archives has films, audio tapes, and video tapes having to do with Notre Dame and Catholic history. Ask Charles Lamb.
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.
We take up most of the sixth floor of the Hesburgh Library on the campus of the University of Notre Dame (north of South Bend, Indiana). We store some of our records off site.
